7:1 – Part Two
Dan kept his eyes on the paper, taking several long breaths, after reading the last line. Ivan thumped his head against the arm braced against the wall and gave a muffled curse. Siobhan looked everywhere except at her friends. The wall, the table, her hands, the table, the door. Her head darted, making a rapid circuit until Prairie got up and gently wrapped her arms around Siobhan from behind.
“It’s okay,” Prairie said in a barely-there voice.
“No. It isn’t.” Siobhan whispered so only Prairie could hear her.
Prairie pressed her head to Siobhan’s shoulder and cocked her head so she could look at Siobhan’s profile. “But it will be.”
“How?”
“Because we’re going to find her.”
“You seem pretty sure,” Ben gritted, responding to Prairie’s statement to Siobhan and causing her to turn her head slightly so she could level her look on him.
“I am. Have a little faith, Ben.”
“In what?” Ben’s harsh tone didn’t seem to faze Prairie. Her smile was soft and sweet, a counterpoint to the utter conviction that dwelled in the gaze she riveted him with. “In us, of course.”
